It’s not just the sound of music coming out of the Orb community: soon you’ll be able to hear brushes moving over canvas and the excited chatter of visual artists getting creative at ArtSpace@Orb. We caught up with Sharon earlier this week for a quick chat about the upcoming art classes she’s running here at Orb from September 8th this year.
Tell us a bit about yourself first: your interests and passion for art
I’ve been training or working in art for most of my life. I left school, went to art school for five years, got a B.A. (Hons) degree in art then fell into a career as a jewellery designer. I carried on studying, spent three years learning how to make silver jewellery and was awarded the ‘Medal for Excellence’ by the board of City and Guilds for my high standard of work. I now realise that teaching art can make a difference.
I find art is a wonderful way to self-express. Art is a skill that can be introduced and nurtured. The results can be an amazing confidence-builder. Creating something beautiful is a very motivating experience and lifts part of you with it.
Tell us about your art classes that you will be running at ArtSpace@Orb
Starting from September 8th on Wednesday mornings (10.30am to 1.00pm) in term time, ArtSpace@Orb will be an exciting place to be … Art classes begin! I have structured the course around many different topics and processes: charcoal to collage, there’s something for everyone. The idea behind all the fun is to encourage the students to feel good about what they can achieve and develop those skills.
What do you hope to achieve with your art classes and what are you looking forward to the most?
ArtSpace@Orb is a perfect place to introduce my class. I hope to build confidence, introduce new ideas, engage students in communicating through art, encourage team spirit within the class and help them feel part of something positive.
Why did you think ArtSpace@Orb would be a good place to hold your art classes?
I chose ArtSpace@Orb because it’s free thinking and open to new ideas. I’ve heard many good things about the place and wanted to be a part of that. I want to open minds and motivate. I can’t think of anywhere better to make a difference.
How do you think this will involve and contribute to the community at ArtSpace@Orb?
Educating any mind has to enrich and improve the community and coming to regular classes will develop many other underpinning skills.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming along to your art classes?
Anyone who wants to come along to the art classes are very welcome! Beginners to accomplished artists. There will be so many different ways to learn how to illustrate and have fun with a fresh approach to understanding art and how to get the best from it!
