“Lovely isn’t it?” beams Sharon as a rubber roller glides pleasingly over a slippery surface of richly coloured ink. It’s Wednesday and one of her aspiring pupils, Paige, is happily getting to grips with mono-printing at an Orb art class under her watchful eye. After throwing in some abstract shapes made of scrap paper and overlaying a blank sheet, Paige pulls the latter back to reveal a colourful print, saturated in deep purple and orange ink.

It’s Paige’s second art lesson at Orb, her first being a session on sketching with charcoal. She proudly presented a piece which everyone had a hand in creating – each member of the art class took it in turn to add their own contribution in a community lead piece of artwork. We thought that was quite fitting with the Orb spirit: creative, supportive and cooperative.

There are seven people in total at Sharon’s art class, which grew in size as morning matured into afternoon – including Orb regulars Mick the gardener and Jake who came along for a bit of creative variety. Nicola takes part too, she’s been involved in ArtSpace@Orb since it began back in 2007 at our old premises.

New faces were in attendance too, like Chrissie who comes along to learn new and different skills. She went to a different art class but found it was missing something:

“It’s different here, this is structured but it’s a bit more flexible if you know what I mean – we’re given things to work with but you can get on with it how you like.”

Here’s some photos of today’s art class to give you a flavour of what goes on.
