It’s Wednesday and it’s turning out to be a different day to normal for Johanna. She has been in the art studio with Sharon and her pupils, learning about the different techniques that are used for making collage.
Monet and Van Gogh were the inspiration for a two hour lesson where she worked with the class’s regular attendees to recreate famous paintings.
“It was really interesting to see Sharon encourage people to work together and how Art can help people from a range of backgrounds to develop their skills whilst having a good time”.
Johanna is a Spanish journalist from Madrid who discovered Orb thanks to the Volunteer Centre in Harrogate. They pointed her in Orb’s direction when she was looking for opportunities to contribute her journalistic skills to a good cause and gain more experience of social media and promotion.
“I’m fortunate to have joined the Orb team two weeks ago as a volunteer as I’m contributing in my own small way to raising Orb’s profile as a provider of fantastic and unusual opportunities for vulnerable people. People come from all sorts of background, mental health, learning disabilities, young unemployed people . . . it’s a really welcoming place”
Johanna will be helping Orb update its Facebook page, writing some articles and providing information about upcoming events like the Art exhibition, which will take place between the 5th and 19th of June at Harrogate Library and show how much Sharon’s pupils have improved their artistic skills as well as their talent.
